FAQ

What is SCR?

A non-profit organization that goes beyond basic shelter to provide comprehensive care for homeless teens.

We are building an opportunity for teens who don't have the access or support they need to be successful in creating a life they love.

We believe by providing kids that are actively seeking help with comprehensive care under one roof, we will meet their safety, psychological, and self-fulfillment needs which will break the cycle of generational trauma and homelessness.

Will you be partnering with other non-profits?

Yes. We are building allies within the local government, and we are partnering with other youth focused organizations like[MOU1]  Looking Glass and 15th Night.

Are you duplicating services?

(We are connecting services; we are enabling services)

We are duplicating services from the standpoint that we will be offering food, shelter, medical care, and education.

How is SCR different?

We’re serving the kids that are actively seeking help.

We are not prescribing or forcing them to make a change.

We are empowering kids with a different option to help them help themselves.

We are offering comprehensive care by providing them with everything they need under one roof.

Our holistic approach is a gamechanger and can help influence other systems.

We are student-centered with a focus on intrinsic motivation.

We don’t force kids to conform to the rules/classroom/teacher/standards. Instead, we conform our classes, content and skills to each kid.  This empowers them to take responsibility for their own education.

The Distinctive Competence of Scorpion Creek Ranch lies in its innovative, holistic model that integrates personalized education with experiential learning and community living. Unlike traditional homeless services, SCR focuses on the long-term personal development and empowerment of homeless youth, ages 14-18, through a supportive "tribe" environment. This approach emphasizes not just academic learning but also emotional, social, and practical life skills development. SCR's unique blend of therapeutic programs, vocational training, and hands-on projects, such as tiny home construction, offers a transformative educational experience designed to prepare students for a successful transition into adulthood and society.

Unfortunately, current programs only address parts of the problem—some offer shelter, others food, and yet others mental health services, virtually no one is addressing all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, specifically  connection, esteem, and self-actualization.

How can I get involved?

We will have a table at events with volunteer sign-up sheets.  Or you can click here for more information.

How many kids are you going to serve?

The initial cohort will be five.

The goal is to build up to 20 within the first 6 months.

We anticipate a waitlist.

What’s the age range?

14-18

How will you connect with kids?

We have already established referral partnerships with existing youth orientated non-profits.

For example: 15th night, a youth-informed Rapid Access Network intent on keeping teens off the streets comes across a youth that aligns with our parameters[MOU4] , and they will connect us.

Where will SCR be located?

The properties have not been purchased yet.

But our plan is for a rural property of 60 - 100 acres in Lane county, no more than 30 minutes from town.

And, we plan on a large transition house in town.

Will it be a working farm?

Yes, the kids will grow their own food and will plan to donate excess to the community.

What are you going to do about alcohol or drug use? Will they be allowed?

Drug and alcohol use is 100% not allowed.

We are going to take a parental not punitive approach.

There will be established consequences for behavior, but our focus will be on finding the root cause of the misbehavior without creating a power struggle.

How are you going to work with these kids when they are: lazy, violent, etc.?

We are going to take an authoritative parental approach.

We will be highly involved and have high expectations.

We will have rules and boundaries and explain why.

And we will balance our expectations with affection and support.

We are going to do everything we can to keep the kids safe by…

  • Listening to them

  • Empowering them

  • And, believing they will rise when given the opportunity

What proven model are you using?

We are pulling from multiple proven models to create a single cohesive program that provides kids with everything they need under one roof.

Education through project-based learning

Proven to result in a decline in absenteeism, an increase in cooperative learning skills, and an improvement in student achievement.

Education through project-based learning and skills-based training has repeatedly been proven to elicit the higher order thinking skills in Bloom's Taxonomy necessary for successful navigation in real world applications.

Stabilized housing

Adequate housing provides stability and a sense of security, essential elements for maintaining good mental health.

When individuals have a safe and stable place to call home, they can focus on their emotional well-being, build stronger relationships, and experience a higher quality of life.

Health benefits that include nutritious and delicious food, and physical, mental, and dental health care.

Trauma Informed Care

A trauma informed approach to care acknowledges that health care organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a patient's life situation.

Inner Family Systems

IFS is adept at addressing various emotional and psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. It involves deep exploration of the psyche to understand and integrate the diverse parts that contribute to one's mental state.

Power of Community

By observing and participating in the community, children learn about themselves, their world, and how to develop positive, constructive relationships with other people.

How much is this going to cost?

Roughly 50K per kid annually

What is the ROI? Net gain of 184K per year

Startup cost of 8 mil

Includes purchase and retrofitting of in-town and rural properties

Annual operating cost of 1.5 million

How are you going to fund it?

We are focused on private funding.

When you reach your sustaining membership goal, how are you going to allocate the 12 million a year?

The intention is to create an endowment to support our expansion to additional locations.

What about…?

We know there are barriers, but if we build a new system based on the existing limitations, we will never move forward.

We are building allies within the local government; we are building allies with partnering organizations and we will cross each bridge when we come to it.
